Concerns of FBCCI at the upcoming
Mini Ministerial of WTO

Dhaka, Thursday, 17 July 2008

Mr. Annisul Huq, President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) will be participating at the upcoming Mini Ministerial of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to be held from 21 July 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland as a member of high powered Bangladesh delegation. Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Hon'ble Advisor for the Ministry of Education and Commerce and the high officials of WTO cell of the ministry are also joining the meeting.

Mr. Annisul Huq, President, FBCCI has already sent a letter on 16 July 2008 (copy enclosed) to Mr. Pascal Lamy, Director General of WTO highlighting the issues of concern of the Private Sector of Bangladesh. Mr. Huq in his letter appreciated the Director General of WTO for his untiring and sincere efforts in guiding the ongoing Doha Round of Negotiations towards a highly cherished conclusion keeping in focus the interest of LDCs. The Private Sector leader of Bangladesh mentioned his conviction  that a credible and commercially meaningful outcome of DDA negotiations in the following areas of particular interest to LDCs will be attained:

·        Notification of duty free & quota free market access for all products originating from all LDCs by 2008 for consultations and review before and conclusion of the ongoing DDA negotiations

·        Simple and transparent Rules of Origin based on value addition criteria

·        Mitigating Preference Erosion

·        Operationalization  of GATS LDC Modalities for LDCs (in areas of particular interest to LDCs specially mode 4)

·        LDCs and NFIDCs concerns in negotiations on Agriculture

·        Operationalization of special and differential treatment provisions of WTO

·        Tangible, need based and predictable technical and financial assistance for capacity building

·        Product diversification in goods and services, and

·        Facilitating compliance of WTO commitments.

The FBCCI President hoped that due consideration to the above will surely enable Bangladesh and LDCs to arrive at a consensus along with other members on other issues under the single undertaking to successfully conclude the Doha round of negotiations.
